Home: Who We Are

WHAT WE DO

What Is A Stand Down?

The term “stand down” is most widely known for its role during the Viet Nam conflict. This was a period of time that active combat troops were removed from the front line after extensive periods of action. Within a safe location, they were able to enjoy hot food and access to hygiene, medical care, counseling, and recreation.

Now that our nation's defenders have returned home, the American River Stand Down wants to provide the same opportunity to all veterans. By consolidating multiple representatives from various resource organizations, we are able to advise our veterans as to how established programs can help them reestablish adequate housing, employment, and access to essential needs.

Some of the services we will provide based on funding and strong community partnership:

  • Clothing distribution

  • Dental screenings

  • Housing assistance

  • Employment services

  • DMV assistance

  • Veterans benefits

  • Veterinary services

  • Haircuts

  • Medical screenings

  • Substance Abuse outreach

  • Food and beverages during the event

A large percentage of homeless veterans have no visibility of established programs that have the ability to make lasting and positive changes in their lives and the lives of their families. This kind of outreach is only possible with strong community partnerships, adequate funding, and the passion of a dedicated volunteer workforce.

Stand Downs are so successful because they bring multiple services to one location at one time, removing many of the barriers to accessing benefits and reconnecting with the community.
